POETRY : Upstairs Downstairs In The Closet / Carson Ash Beker
Carson Ash Beker sent us this wonderful poem “Upstairs Downstairs In The Closet” a while back and we just knew it would fit perfectly on the website. Beker’s writing and their reading of that writing has a beautifully caustic energy to it, a rapid-fire delivery that brings a hint of humor with an edge. We can never get enough of.
Give it a listen, you’ll know what we’re saying.

Kondo this.
This upstairs downstairs time
Is a good Time
To clean out your closets
And match your shoes
Until you open a closet and find
Too many Spring Break boys
Where do ventilators go when you’re not using them
The junk drawer
Is at capacity again
If the shape of a mountain
Upside down
Is an hourglass
Task list this task force
To do: Open this drawer and decide:
What do you do with old sex toys?
From before?
Aren’t you surprised they’re still here, like
Refugee camps and detention centers and prisons
Maybe it’s best to just -
Kondo this:
Organizing boxes
Distance us, got distance
Time, got time?
What is 6 feet and three hours
Is it Tuesday again
Who says these walls
Want
What walls
Want?
Who says
They want to protect us
And from what?
